Jalapenos & IBS

Some of you may think I’m crazy, but Jalapenos combined with Lime can actually improve IBS symptoms. As part of my “Eat Your Oils” campaign, I’m tackling the subject of IBS Awareness in April. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a problem that affects the large intestine. It can cause abdominal cramping, bloating, and a change in bowel movements.

One might think that the hotness of a Jalapeno and the acid in Lime would harm those with IBS. However, studies prove just the opposite. Lime benefits IBS because the acid actually reduces the amount of mucus in the digestive track, alleviating stomach upset. Additionally, and while it varies on a case-by-case basis, Jalapenos are the good type of hot that can kill bacteria in the stomach lining – thus improving IBS symptoms.

One of the best things you can do is use PURE Lime essential oils to replace lime juice in a variety of recipes. One of my favorites is this Lime, Goat Cheese and Jalapeno Dip / Spread. Here’s the recipe:

2 cans white kidney beans

1/4 jalapeno

2-ounce plain goat cheese

1-3 drops Lime essential oil

1 teaspoon honey

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

To Make:

Place all ingredients, except  olive oil, into the bowl of a food processor.

Pulse 6 times. Pulse 10-15 times adding small amounts of olive oil until the desired consistency is reached. Taste and adjust any seasonings to your liking.
