Stop drinking anything that isn’t water based right now. Most of our sugar is consumed via beverages. We tend to drink juices, sodas, and coffee house lattes that are full of fat and sugar. If you stick with water, black coffee, and herbal teas then you can greatly reduce your dependence on sugar.
- Become a label reader. Most foods that are advertised as “sugar-free” really aren’t- they’ve just found a way around listing sugar as sugar on the label. I promise that if you look close enough, sugar is listed on the label under a different name.
- Clean your cabinets. We are natural grazers. If you don’t have sugar products readily available, you’re likely to make better dietary choices. Clean out the cabinets and ditch the cookies, cakes, etc.
- Smoothie check. It is possible to make an unhealthy smoothie. For example, if you make a strawberry, orange and banana smoothie in the morning- you’re giving your body a high dose of sugar right off the bat. One hour from drinking what sounds like a healthy smoothie, your body will be craving sugar again. You’ll feel bad and have to eat and chances are you’ll be at work or on the road and pick a not-so-healthy snack. Start your day with a green smoothie. If you do add a fruit, pick only one to add and make sure you check the portion size.
- Dessert doesn’t have to be chocolate. OK, don’t panic. There are plenty of other sweet options that are really good for you vs. a traditional dessert. A blood orange sprinkled with salt and a little chili powder, accompanied by a small piece of dark chocolate, will do the trick.
