All this said, I know some of you are on the fence about sugar. You want to know if it truly impacts your health in the ways that I speak about in various blogs, interviews, and in my book. Well, yes! Sugar harms your health. If you’re merely thinking about cutting it out of your diet right now, keep reading. I’m going to list 3 simple ways to cut out sugar from your diet. You can try these and see how you feel. If you love it, and I am sure you will, I have plenty of in-person and online programs available to keep the feeling sustained.
Now and without further delay… here are my 3 simple ways to cut out sugar;
1. Become “hidden-sugar” aware. Don’t assume anything about the food or drinks you intake. You need to become a detective and investigate for yourself. For example, low-fat foods often contain extra sugar to help improve their taste and to add bulk and texture in place of fat. Even healthy ready-made soups and sauces may contain added sugar. Don’t go by label claims alone… seek out hidden sugars.
2. Know what hidden sugars are called on labels. Check the ingredients list for anything ending in “ose” (glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, maltose) – these are all forms of sugar, as are honey, agave, molasses and syrups such as corn and rice syrup. The higher up the ingredients list, the more sugar the product contains. Food companies are shying away from using the word sugar for a reason. Don’t be deceived any longer.
3. Cut the amount of sugar you add to hot drinks. Do this gradually to give your taste buds time to adjust. Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to cappuccino or hot chocolate instead of stirring in sugar. Cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar levels and adds flavor without the sweetness. If you drink soda, and you shouldn’t, cut the amount in half for two weeks and then cut it out all together.
