How Sugar Makes You Look Older than You Actually Are
When you eat sugar it goes through a natural process in the body known as glycation. This is when sugar and other carbs (think breads, pastries, pasta, cakes, cookies, soda and starches) quickly convert to glucose in the bloodstream and the excess sugar molecules attach to collagen fibers. Once attached, new molecules known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs you acquire. And what exactly do AGEs do? For one, they wipe out collagen and elastin. You know that stuff that makes your skin firm and elastic. Think of collagen and elastic as these supple and pliable proteins that allow skin to remain wrinkle free. AGEs destroy these springy proteins and make them dry and stiff instead, quickly causing wrinkles and skin that sags. This usually starts in your mid-30s and then quickly progresses as you age. Aside from just damaging collagen sugar also changes the type of collagen you have. Your skin contains 3 different types of collagen: collagen I, collagen II, and collagen III. Type I is the most fragile and Type III is the strongest. Consuming too much sugar makes type III collagen turn into type I, which makes your skin look saggy and you look much older than you should. Sugar also increases levels of leptin and insulin in the body while increasing receptor sensitivity to both. This has a HUGE influence on premature aging and also puts you at risk for a slew of different diseases. As if that’s not enough, get this. AGEs totally turn off your body’s natural antioxidant enzymes. Okay, but what does this mean for your skin? You’re now more susceptible to sun damage…which is the biggest culprit for aging skin there is.
