Supplements for Gorgeous, Glowing Skin
Supplements for Gorgeous, Glowing Skin
Getting healthy, younger looking skin is all about nourishing your body. What we put in our bodies has everything to do with the health of our skin. We definitely want to be sure to eat the right foods…and eliminate the bad ones (bye-bye sugar), but I know that sometimes it’s tough to get all the nutrients we need through diet alone. This is why I want to suggest supplements for gorgeous, glowing skin. Did you know that taking certain supplements is extremely beneficial to a number of different skin problems? It’s true. Wrinkles, age spots, acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea problems can be addressed through proper supplementation. When taken daily they will do wonders for our skin. Not a fan of supplementation? You could be missing the mark. I’m talking about a BIG difference here ladies and gentlemen!
Why Take Supplements for Your Skin?
I wouldn’t recommend taking supplements if I didn’t personally believe in them myself. Like everybody, I have some crazy busy days, when I can’t always eat the way I like. So I know that I am “supplementing” what I’ve missed that day. Early on in my journey to repair and restore my health I learned how important it was to combat free-radical damage cause by oxidative stress of the cells and toxic overload that caused inflammation The fact is that we are constantly being bombarded by toxins from the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the stuff we rub all over our body. Get this. According to the EPA there are over 80,000 chemicals in our bodies. Can you even imagine?? We are literally overburdened with chemicals. They’re in the food we eat and in the products we use. Lipstick, makeup, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and perfumes are full of nasty chemicals that end up stuck inside our bodies. Of the thousands of chemicals we’re exposed to each day, 20% of them are water soluble and 80% are fat soluble. And their favorite place to reside is in the liver. Liver health is directly related to our overall health…skin included. The liver can’t handle this toxic overload and these chemicals end up stored in our fat. This toxicity is terrible for our bodies and ends up causing free-radical damage and inflammation. The cells of our skin become “grumpy”. And grumpy skin means a plethora of skin problems…aging included.
7 Supplements for Seriously Gorgeous Skin
1. Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is an important vitamin you can feed your skin on a daily basis. Not only does it help improve the immune function of the skin, but is also vital for cell growth and repair. D3 pretty much “un-does” the damage that’s been done to skin over time. The thing is we literally can’t produce the amount of D3 we need.
Between the ages of 20-70, the skin loses its ability to produce vitamin D3 on its own. And while the sun is a good source, too much sun is directly responsible for damaging the skin and causing wrinkles and age spots. Taking 5000 IUs daily however, can reduce the damage that’s been done to our skin while regenerating skin cells and protecting from further damage.
A vitamin D deficiency (which many people have) has been linked to issues with severe eczema symptoms. Taking a supplement can help repair and strengthen the immunity of the skin resulting in fewer infections and less inflammation. You’ll have happier (not grumpier) skins cells too!
2. Probiotics
I’m here to spread the word. Everyone should be taking a quality probiotic. This is true especially if you have digestive issues. Chances are you are not assimilating all the vitamins and minerals that are in the food you eat and a quality probiotic will definitely help that.
Considering skin health is directly related to gut health, getting the probiotics you need to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the body is a must for healthy skin. The right amount of good bacteria helps to reduce inflammation which is responsible for skin conditions like acne and rosacea. Recommended intake daily is 50 billion 2 x a day!
Taking probiotics has the potential to help clear up acne, reduce the symptoms and severity of eczema, and help control symptoms of rosacea. Taking probiotics will allow you to see a major difference in the health of your skin if you suffer from any of these frustrating skin problems.
What’s more is that probiotics might help build collagen! That’s right. Probiotics also hold the potential to promote younger looking skin. Remember that a healthy gut is responsible for gorgeous, glowing skin…and in this case probiotics may help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while hydrating dry, tired skin.
3. Omega 3
Omega 3s are essential fatty acids that are “essential” to healthy skin. They are famous for their anti-inflammatory properties, extremely beneficial to enhancing the appearance of skin, and specifically helping with skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, and rosacea.
Taking 1000-2000mg of Omega 3s 2 x daily can seriously reduce inflammation and possibly prevent acne and other skin problems from forming. If you suffer from skin problems and take the right amount of Omega 3s each day, you’re going to soon see you symptoms disappear.
4. Holy Basil
Holy smokes! Did you know that holy basil is amazing for the appearance of your skin? This botanical is known as an adaptogen (something that greatly improves your body’s ability to adapt to life’s stressors). Holy basil also purifies the blood and acts as a powerful antioxidant, which are critical as a defense against the aging process. Holy basil is also great for clearing up acne because of the significant antibacterial properties too. Consider taking 500 mg of holy basil 2 x daily, you’re going to get “the glow” and potentially taking years off the appearance of your skin.
5. Ashwagandha
This herb native to India, North Africa, and the Middle East is full of antioxidants and is considered one of the most influential herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s great for skin and hair and also increases calm and energy at the same time.
Ashwagandha is another well-known adaptogen herb that reduces the signs of aging because of the way it works on the skin. It stimulates DHEA (a hormone that helps build new skin tissue known for its anti-aging properties) and promotes the creation of skin proteins elastin and collagen.
6. Liver Support
Earlier I spoke about toxins in out body and how they make our cells grumpy. The liver is the largest glandular organ in the body and performs multiple critical functions to keep the body pure of toxins and harmful substances. This means that the health of your liver is directly linked to the health of your whole, skin included. Dandelion and milk thistle are two excellent herbs you can add as daily supplements to increase liver health and in turn, increase the health of your skin. Both are powerful antioxidants that help fight free radical damage.. Start sipping on dandelion root tea or taking a tincture of milk thistle daily to help support healthy liver function for younger looking, gorgeous, glowing skin.
7. Collagen
By now you know that collagen is what’s responsible for that youthful gorgeous, glowing skin we’re all going for and trying to maintain as we age. You’re also probably aware that as we age the amount of collagen we produce naturally in the body begins to diminish. Research shows that taking a collagen supplement can help increase the suppleness of the skin and help to rebuild what’s been damaged or diminished over time. Taking collagen supplements for just 8 weeks can reduce fine lines and wrinkles by 20%, bringing back the younger version of you in virtually no time at all.
Adding these supplements to your daily routine is one of the easiest additions you can make to increase the health of your skin. A word to the wise: as with any drugs, or medications, be sure to consult your Naturopathic doctor or health care professional before taking these or any supplementation By eating the right foods and taking the right supplements daily I’m confident that you’re going to start noticing a big difference in the appearance of your skin.
