Fit in Body and Mind
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle extends beyond diet and exercise. Your entire person should be kept healthy and optimally performing: body and mind.
Get Your ZZzzzzssss. This means you must not skimp on sleeping or physical exercise. Sleep deprivation keeps your brain from operating at full capacity. Pulling an all nighter? Bad idea! Say goodbye to your critical thinking skills and creativity. Sleep is critical to learning and memory as key memory-enhancing activity occurs at the deepest stages of sleep.
Pump it Up. Physical exercise helps your mental clarity by increasing oxygen in the brain. Further, it may also protect brain cells and enhance the effects of helpful brain chemicals.
Cut out the Booze. Memory loss affects us all, but there are many things we can do improve our memory and overall brain function. There are supplements I’ll discuss below that can boost the brain. But I have to touch on a couple dietary tips first, that can help keep your mind crisp. First, stop drinking. Excessive drinking can deplete the body of B vitamins and zinc. Further, alcohol makes it more difficult for your body to digest and absorb needed nutrients. So, keep the number of cocktails down to keep your mind performance up.
Fat is Where its At. Whether from diet or supplement, make sure you are getting your omega-3s. These fatty acids are so beneficial for brain health. Fish like salmon, tuna, halibut and trout are extremely rich sources of omega-3. But krill oil is a phenomenal supplemental choice, especially if you are not a fan of fish. There are also non-fish sources like walnuts, flax seed, and kidney, pinto and soy beans available. Not only with this fatty acid boost your brainpower, studies have indicated it may also lower your risk from developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Boost Your Brain. B vitamins are what you need if you want to boost your brain. Even mild deficiencies in these vitamins can have an impact on your thinking and memory. A B-complex vitamin with B6, B12, thiamin and riboflavin is a great addition to your daily multivitamin. The addition has been shown by studies to increase brain activity and improve memory. Further, thiamin deficiencies have been should to cause mood changes, disorderly thinking and mental depression. Even a small amount can make a significant difference.
Eliminate sugar. This is a HUGE component of working to your health. The white and processed stuff (sugar) contributes to Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, and so much more. Instead, consider all the natural alternatives (like pure honey) to satisfy your cravings.
