Are You A Sugar Addict?
Sugar is just as addicting as cocaine! Sounds harsh? ABC National News said the same exact thing. In fact, here is the station’s full report: http://abc13.com/health/study-sugar-is-as-addictive-as-cocaine/533979/ Sugar has the same “good feeling” impact on the brain, which makes it no surprise that it is just as- if not more- addicting than cocaine. And, like any drug addiction, sugar addiction can kill you!
So, how do you know if you are really addicted to sugar or just love eating sweet stuff? Well, there are a few distinctive ‘tells’. If you find yourself making excuses to have sugar, like “it’s organic” or “if I don’t eat it, my head will hurt” then you probably have an addiction. Other signs include making special trips to the store to pickup a sweet treat or heading to the coffee shop to drink up some of those sugar-laced lattes. Using sugar as a motivator to do something (especially a daily responsibility that you should not need any motivation for) is a sign of sugar addiction. And finally, keeping a secret stash – well…. that’s a big one.
I knew a friend who was all about no-processed foods. Everything had to be raw, organic and vegan. She seemed to always be ‘up’ and then I noticed she was having mood swings, migraines, and stomach issues. Considering her dedication to the “perfect” diet, I thought she may have been under a lot of work stress. That is, until I decided to plant watch for her one weekend when she had to travel out of town. I found her stash of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups hidden inside a pillowcase, between the back of a pillow and the linen of the case. Well, it wasn’t even a stash as much as it was the wrappers for the candy. She was addicted and secretly serving her cravings, which made sense when I reconsidered her behavior!
Too much sugar can harm your body enough to kill you. There is a HUGE different between treating yourself to a cookie now and then and changing your mental and physical being to have that cookie. The dependence can and does happen to people everyday.
