Sugar & Depression

Several people who suffer from chronic severe depression and anxiety are allergic to sugar and foods, like white flour, that the human body processes like sugar. Interesting, right? Sugar causes inflammation. The insulin-resistant fat cells you pack on when you eat too much sugar produces nasty inflammatory messages (cytokines), which – in turn, spreads their damage to the brain. In fact, researchers have suggested calling depression “metabolic syndrome Type II” because instead of just having a fat swollen belly, you also get a depressed brain. And psychiatrists are starting to treat depression and psychiatric disorders with anti-diabetic drugs. What do these drugs do? Well, they lower blood sugar, lower insulin, and reduce inflammation.

Eating lots of sugar is going to give you sudden peaks in the amount of glucose in your blood; symptoms that are going to include fatigue, irritability, dizziness, insomnia, excessive sweating (especially at night), poor concentration and forgetfulness, excessive thirst, depression and crying spells, digestive disturbances and blurred vision. Since the brain depends on an even supply of glucose it is no surprise to find that sugar has been implicated in aggressive behavior, anxiety, and depression, and fatigue.

So, along with all the other health complications that sugar causes, depression and anxiety are now added to the list and there are several studies available that will back up my claims. Now, what is next? Well, you have to overcome an addiction to sugar that you may not know you have, most people don’t. Once you overcome the this, you can go on to live a physically and mentally healthier life… but the addiction is just like any other addiction – terribly hard to break.  Here is one study from ABC news stating what I just said: http://abc13.com/health/study-sugar-is-as-addictive-as-cocaine/533979/
