White Chocolate – The Worst!
Some people believe that sugar is sugar and chocolate is chocolate. Well, this is not true! Dark chocolate has some health benefits. This said, white chocolate isn’t healthy in any sense. There are no antioxidants. There isn’t any brain boosting components. White chocolate is basically lard in fancy foil!
The basic ingredients used in the preparation of white chocolate are sugar, cocoa butter, milk, soy lecithin and natural or artificial flavors. 60 percent of white chocolate is actually sugar. And white chocolate is not really chocolate because it lacks cocoa solids or cocoa powder. Yes, you’re basically eating sugar, milk, butter and artificial flavors.
According to The Mayo Clinic, white chocolate contains 151 calories, 9 grams of fat, 5 grams of saturated fat, 17 grams of carbohydrates, no fiber, and 1 gram of protein per 1-ounce square. Milk chocolate has exactly the same amount of calories per serving, but with more nutrients. Dark chocolate containing between 70 percent and 85 percent cocoa contains slightly more calories, more fat, more protein, more fiber and fewer carbohydrates — approximately 167 calories, 11.9 grams of fat, 6.9 grams of saturated fat, 12.9 grams of carbohydrates, 3.1 grams of fiber and 2.2 grams of protein per ounce. But it does have antioxidant impact on the blood and the brain, which is a positive!
There is no real health benefit to eating white chocolate. Someone once asked me about drizzling white chocolate over strawberries because it helped their calcium intake. Um, no! If you’re worried about calcium, drink milk or eat more leafy greens (many of which actually have calcium and potassium). Drizzling any chocolate over fruit is not recommended. Eating fruit alone, and in its natural state, should be enough!.
We’re all human. While I hope all of you are not bingeing on chocolate, it is unrealistic for me to think you are not going to slip a piece here and there. This said, if you do sneak a piece, please opt for the dark chocolate vs. the white chocolate.
